What does “The Moldau“ by Bedrich Smetana have in common with “Billie Jean“ by Michael Jackson? Both are in the repertoire of an award-winning accordion orchestra: SAFARI, from the Czech Republic. The concert accordion is a very popular instrument in central Europe. In fact, a music conservatory student can major in accordion performance! Eighteen Czech teenagers will perform in the St. Louis area during their first U.S. tour and would love to share their attractive and unusual music with you. Their repertoire consists of multiple genres from classical, film music, and jazz, to popular melodies.
The orchestra was established in 2006 as a part of ZUS Strezina, a national school of music located in the city of Hradec Kralove. The orchestra consists of twelve accordions and a rhythm section (guitar, keyboard, bass, drums, and percussion) and also features vocal soloists. The orchestra members range from 11–18 years of age.
Under the leadership of their founder, Mr. Radek Škeřík (an accomplished jazz accordion player, conductor, and arranger), these young players were the finalists at the Felicita Music Festival in Italy in 2010. They also won the silver medal at the International Accordion Festival in Prague in 2012. They recorded their first album a year ago and are looking forward to sharing their music with audiences in the St. Louis area.
SAFARI is available for concerts in St. Louis area schools, October 3-7, 2014.
